Interesting news coming out today on the visual novel front from Taiwan. Three of the leading visual novel developers in the region have teamed up for one project: A Light in the Dark. While we don’t know at this time what each partner will be bringing to the collaboration, their overall skill are well-acknowledged in the West. CreSpirit is the group behind Rabi-Ribi: a surprising hit that blends Metroidvania-style level design and Bullet-Hell action sequences. Storia and Narrator are frequent collaborators already: teaming up for the Chinese-only Dong-Jin Rice-hime and 7 Days with Death. Narrator should be a bit more familiar with the North American audience thanks to the release of Companion and Koi Musubi, along with a strong library of Chinese-only releases since 2011.

So, how does Sekai Project fit into this?

It seems that their role will be in crowdfunding extra content, voice acting in both Chinese and Japanese (I saw no mention for English voice acting, but I will ask the question and update the story as needed) as well as presumably the cost the bring it to the West and the various translations. I am cautiously optimistic about the project’s tentative deadline which is May of this year. However, I will be following it with interest as it pushes towards it $28,000 goal. Here is the synopsis:

Hao-Chen Jiang did not understand what it was when he opened his eyes. Before him was a dim and dreary room that he had not seen before. Trying to get up to turn on the lights, he finds that his arms are tied behind him and that is when he realizes that he’s been kidnapped. It is then that a mysterious girl appears before him and with a look of disdain tells him that he’s been kidnapped and unless his family agrees to pay a ransom he has no chance to escape. But perhaps there is more to this than just money…

The rich boy stuck in his never changing daily life…
The fierce girl struggling for survival…
Two people in totally opposite positions in life.

During his days of imprisonment, they will learn of a world they were never aware of which will crumble away at their deep-rooted prejudices. In the face of confusion and the choices before them, what will they find…?
