4. One Small Fire at a Time (Kidalang)
This game gets better the more you play it, I swear. On a surface level, One Small Fire at a Time is an interesting twist on the fantasy genre: putting us in the shoes of a young girl in a magical world who cannot use magic. That by itself would be more than enough but then its adds its layers. There is the commentary on how society treats those who its defines as ‘abnormal’, how the ‘abnormal’ are often the resource used to advance medicine and knowledge, how segregation is normalized and, something rarely discussed in media, how society treats and dehumanizes soldiers. That is a lot of content and yet Kidalang delivers it with practiced ease: wrapping us up with its eccentric and complex cast and delivering an amazing, often heartbreaking story that remains one of the most underrated visual novels released.
