Have I mentioned you guys should follow Sanguine Rose‘s development lately? No? Do that. Trust me on this one. Follow them.
Sanguine Rose walks a fine line between an erotic story and a dramatic thriller and, at least in its demos so far, has done so incredibly well. The characters have several shades to them that get fleshed out thanks to their circumstances and every moment is weighed by the fact that no one can really trust the game’s antagonist: Carmen Valentine. She’s a master of manipulation and has no problem using her raw sexuality to get others to do what she wants and the case-in-point is the very first sex scene between Carmen and the protagonist Roman.
While the tone of the act will depend on the player’s choices, none of them changes the fact that Carmen will use the situation to get into Roman’s head. It not only continues the cat-and-mouse themes of the narrative, but is also fairly erotica to read. It legitimately feels like there is sexual tension between Roman and Carmen and the narrative does a great job of making their tryst, in whatever form it takes, as a natural outcome of them both just being in the room together. Where the full game will take this dynamic remains to be seen, but it is easily off to a great start.
