2) Catherine and Guilleme (Cupid)

Cupid is a visual novel combining mystery, romance and Gothic Horror in a way that still makes it stand as one of the greatest visual novels ever made: yes, I’m removing the English qualifier for this one. The narrative spins two different timelines to build the mystery around Catherine: the main character’s (Rosa) friend and deuteragonist’s (Guilleme’s) love interest. For most of the game, the audience doesn’t see anything specifically that points to Guilleme being responsible for Catherine’s death, but the tension is thick enough for us to know something went wrong somewhere. As their relationship crumbles, the tension grows between them and in the back of your mind, you don’t want to think anything bad is about to happen. That somehow, someway it worked out and it was just another tragedy that neither side could explain, but were not responsible for.
Then, the sex scene happens.
It’s one of the most brilliant and abjectly terrifying scenes in fiction I’ve ever read. It gets darker and darker the further it goes and finally lands into a realm of near cosmic horror once you realize exactly what happens between the two. It serves as the turning point for the entire game: absolutely removing any doubt of Guilleme’s innocence while opening a dark new narrative in the game about the monsters in all of us that feeds on other’s. Not exactly the most romantic sex scenes of all time, but definitely one of the best.
