The Five Best English Visual Novel Sex Scenes
1) Chris and Kai (Tomboys Need Love Too!)
Sex scenes in hentai or pornographic visual novels/games are often the reward for picking the right combinations of choices throughout the game. Whether or not those choices fit the narrative moment is irrelevant to this end and this often leads to bad writing. I have covered more than my share of bad sex scenes and have often been maligned for not wanting any more of it. But when it works, it works well and no EVN sex scene shows that potential better than when Chris and Kai in Zetsubou’s Tomboys Need Love Too FINALLY hooked up.
From the offset its clear they both have feelings for one another. It’s was just also clear that Chris’ feelings were fare more sexually charged than Kai’s. However, their banter and obvious connection through the early parts of the game quickly moves the audience into their corner. I said it when I named it as one of the Best of 2017 and it still stand: you will root for Chris and Kai to end up together after its all said and done. And the sex scene that happens is actually really good. Not only does it serve as the climax (cough) to their narrative, it also capitalizes on the banter we’ve gotten before. It doesn’t feel like an act, in other words. Just two people who finally (FINALLY) realized they were in love with one another.
Good sex scenes in fiction should, ideally, be about the characters involved in them. Not about the writer’s fantasies or the audience’s, but as a natural part of the story we’re reading. For me, Chris and Kai’s storyline throughout this game and conclusion should be the model those who want to write sex should learn from. Not copy, but definitely learn from. Really there is something here for most any writer looking to try their hands at something a bit more titillating, but I’d also love to hear from you.
