5. Cave! Cave! Deus Videt! (We Are Muesli)

‘Are games art?’ They can be and this is where the conversation truly started. Inspired by the work of Hieronymus Bosch, Cave! Cave! Deus Videt! uses several mediums to explore one of Bosch’s most famous works, The Temptation of St. Anthony. This exploration does not lean on a singular interpretation, allowing for a branching narrative to follow individual theories and commentary on the work without any of the branches declaring itself ‘the right one’. So, for someone like me who appreciates art mostly superficially, exploring a piece of art this way was a completely new experience. The surreal direction also helped; keeping the audience on its toes as you comb through the artwork in a maddening spiral in search of answers and ALL of this is only there to feed into the larger plot of a boy who may or may not have gone mad. It’s a brilliant piece of work that may not be for everyone, but should be played at least once by anyone looking to get into VNs.
