17. The Doll House (Atelier Sento)
The Doll House brings to the table a slow, methodical sense of horror that relies more on the audience being unsettled and uncomfortable that outright scared. The difficultly is doubled because you are supposed to be unnerved by the Protagonist: the character the audience is supposed to empathize and relate to the most. Atelier Sento draws out how they break this trust: revealing its secrets in a grim, but stylized fashion that keeps the audience well in place through the story. And once the second Protagonist is introduced, all of the work building to her introduction is realized with amazing success as all the audience wants to do is to, essentially, keep her safe. It’s a masterclass of horror: easily a standout from this small group and something that should be experienced like all good scary story should: in the dark.
