Ten Years of VNs Now Special Feature: Fifty EVNs JP Recommends (29-11)
14. The Last Birdling (Invert Mouse)
I always cringe a bit whenever I’m told that a visual novel either ‘subverts the formula’ (what formula you cowards? Katawa Shoujo?) or ‘isn’t like other visual novels’. A small part of me appreciate that The Last Birdling could absolutely make that claim and be 100% right but doesn’t. This game fully subverts everything you’ve been told about a ‘two kids from different worlds meet’ story and does more than enough before plunging in the traumatic knife at the midway point and twisting; slowly. One of the finest tragedies in gaming as a whole, you just can’t help but feel for both Tayo and Bimonia as they deal with the truth of their world and the dark places their friendship takes them. And, ultimately, there is no ‘good’ ending. But since this is one of the games were multiple endings gives the audience some relief on the utter grimness of the tale, hopefully your preferred ending to this one gives you peace.
