22. The Shadows That Run Alongside Our Car (LoxRain)
The Shadows That Run Alongside Our Car was made within four days. Considering it is one of the all-time great visual novels it is a stunning, yet accurate statement. The game doesn’t overstay its welcome, or overcomplicates its cast, or even fully explains how both Dylan and Shelby survived as long as they have. What it does do its brood over what can only artfully be described as ‘The End’. Good Horror is about pulling the audience into a place where they know something bad is going to happen to the characters they see on screen and slowly twisting the knife; pulling out as much dread in the situation as possible. Even the most hopefully ending still ends with the realization that whatever ‘normal’ was before they both got in that car is now gone and all that is left is ‘The End’. It is a strange moment of calm in a Hellish situation and one fantastic dark tale.
