Ten Years of VNs Now Special Feature: Fifty EVNs JP Recommends (50-30)
39. Device 6 (Simongo)
If you don’t have an Apple device, this one probably slipped by you. Device 6 is an exploration game with a bizarre 1960’s British aesthetic and a very catchy song. It’s also a deeply intriguing story: a thriller set on a mysterious island that sees the protagonist Anna try all means available to survive. The game keeps the audience invested by using both the text and choices in the game to create a unique set of puzzles for them to solve: each one reflecting the greater mystery of the game and adding more questions than answers. Ultimately, it’s these small questions that pulls you deeper than any clear answer and this is what makes it such an effective thriller. Even though this and many others won’t fit into the pure context of what people think visual novels should be, if I’m giving recommendations and the person has an iPad, this would be the first game I tell them to get on it.
