Ten Years of VNs Now Special Feature: Fifty EVNs JP Recommends (50-30)
45. Long Live the Queen (Hanako Games)
Before another came for the crown, it seemed like this would be the blueprint for aspiring VN developers. One of the most important jobs for a developer is deciding how to keep their audience engaged for multiple narrative paths in a game and Long Live the Queen lives on Hanako’s success in that area: tying its audience to a chair for hours at a time as they navigate Elodie’s brutal world and ensure she makes it to her coronation. It’s a twisting path that involves political and diplomatic machinations that keep me invested, but also with a colorful, yet interestingly dark cast that you will never fully trust. Ever. Still, it has aged pretty well and continues to be worth the hours you will inevitably pour into it.
