The Most Anticipated VNs of 2018

8) Fatal Twelve (AEIOU Kompany/Sekai Project)

The death game subgenre has been beaten into the ground over the past few years. So much so that the Danganronpa creator has even decided to make meta comments about it. However, the series has yet to give us someting that truly lives up to its potential: a tragedy. Fatal Twelve is shaping up to be just that: featuring a protagonist and participants that are already dead. The game makes no attempt to copy the style or aesthetics of its contemporaries and it makes the proceedings all the more unnerving: feeding into the idea that this particular ‘game’ is as much a part of the natural order as the game’s host says it is.

Whether or not it’ll even fit into the ‘death game’ subgenre by the end is also anyone’s guess. However the end of the demo, where we watched someone’s soul get wiped out of existence, one thing was achieved that the subgenre hadn’t achieved up until that point: I was emotionally invested in the characters. Or, at least, in Rinka and Miharu thanks to both the writing and artistic direction. The entire demo focuses on them and told an incredibly tragic story that got me hooked. I’m not sure what will happen next, but I’m looking forward to the full game.
